Studying Invention: The Hand Tool as a Model System.Antolin M. Llorente, Stacey Dixon & Robert J. Weber - 1993 - Science, Technology and Human Values 18 (4):480-505.
Invention is an important source of technology, and, to understand invention, one needs a model system or prototype. A candidate model system is the hand tool. Using the hand tool as an example, the authors present a systematic approach to invention, dealing with description, classification, and joining or integrating simpler forms. Heuristics for when to integrate are presented. Finally, the authors introduce a new way of thinking about hand tools: simple spatial transformations applied to an abstract element make possible the (...)

On the Validity of Simulating Stagewise Development by Means of PDP Networks: Application of Catastrophe Analysis and an Experimental Test of Rule‐Like Network Performance.Risto Miikkulainen, Regina Vollmeyer, Bruce D. Burns, Keith J. Holyoak, Maartje E. J. Raijmakers, Sylvester van Koten, Peter C. M. Molenaar, Daniel Jurafsky, Gerhard Weber & Giuseppe Mantovani - 1996 - Cognitive Science 20 (1):101-136.
This article addresses the ability of Parallel Distributed Processing (PDP) networks to generate stagewise cognitive development in accordance with Piaget's theory of cognitive epigenesis. We carried out a replication study of the simulation experiments by McClelland (1989) and McClelland and Jenkins (1991) in which a PDP network learns to solve balance scale problems. In objective tests motivated from catastrophe theory, a mathematical theory of transitions in epigenetical systems, no evidence for stage transitions in network performance was found. It is concluded (...)

    John Buridan’s Physics Commentaries Revisited Manuscripts and Redactions.Paul J. J. M. Bakker & Michiel Streijger - 2023 - Bulletin de Philosophie Medievale 64:67-166.
This article revisits the manuscript tradition and the different redactions of John Buridan’s commentaries on Aristotle’s Physics. The aim of the article is threefold. First, it makes some corrections to the lists of manuscripts containing the third redaction and the final redaction of Buridan’s questions commentary on the Physics. Second, it argues that manuscript Zaragoza, Biblioteca Capitular de la Seo, cod. 15-61, ff. 1r-62v, contains a previously unknown version of the final redaction (together with the standard version from f. 62v (...)

    Social Construction in the Philosophy of Mathematics: A Critical Evaluation of Julian Cole’s Theory†: Articles.J. M. Dieterle - 2010 - Philosophia Mathematica 18 (3):311-328.
Julian Cole argues that mathematical domains are the products of social construction. This view has an initial appeal in that it seems to salvage much that is good about traditional platonistic realism without taking on the ontological baggage. However, it also has problems. After a brief sketch of social constructivist theories and Cole’s philosophy of mathematics, I evaluate the arguments in favor of social constructivism. I also discuss two substantial problems with the theory. I argue that unless and until social (...)

    Other-Oriented Hermeneutical Injustice, Affected Ignorance, or Human Ignorance?J. M. Dieterle - 2023 - Social Epistemology 37 (6):852-863.
Paul-Mikhail Podosky introduces the notion of other-oriented hermeneutical injustice and argues that non-human animals are often the subjects of such injustice. In this paper, I argue that although the notion of other-oriented hermeneutical injustice is coherent, Podosky’s examples – including his primary case of non-human animals – are not instances of it. I attempt to show that an epistemology of ignorance serves as a better theoretical basis for Podosky’s argument. In the final section of the paper, I discuss a case (...)

    The Riddle of Human Emotional Crying: A Challenge for Emotion Researchers.Ad J. J. M. Vingerhoets & Lauren M. Bylsma - 2016 - Emotion Review 8 (3):207-217.
Until now, adult crying has received relatively little interest from investigators, whereas in the popular media there are many strong claims about crying (e.g., crying brings relief) of which the scientific basis is not clear. In this review, we provide an overview of the current state of the scientific literature with respect to crying. We identify gaps in knowledge and propose questions for future research. The following topics receive special attention: Ontogenetic development, antecedents, individual and gender differences, and the intra- (...)

State-to-State Cosmology: A New View on the Cosmological Arrow of Time and the Past Hypothesis.J. M. Deutsch & Anthony Aguirre - 2022 - Foundations of Physics 52 (4):1-21.
Cosmological boundary conditions for particles and fields are often discussed as a Cauchy problem, in which configurations and conjugate momenta are specified on an “initial” time slice. But this is not the only way to specify boundary conditions, and indeed in action-principle formulations we often specify configurations at two times and consider trajectories joining them. Here, we consider a classical system of particles interacting with short range two body interactions, with boundary conditions on the particles’ positions for an initial and (...)

Shifting the Focus: Food Choice, Paternalism, and State Regulation.J. M. Dieterle - 2019 - Food Ethics 5 (1-2):1-16.
In this paper, I examine the question of whether there is justification for regulations that place limits on food choices. I begin by discussing Sarah Conly’s recent defense of paternalist limits on food choice. I argue that Conly’s argument is flawed because it assumes a particular conception of health that is not universally shared. I examine this conception of health in some detail, and I argue that we need to shift our focus from individual behaviors and lifestyle to the broader (...)

Kaiser, Träume und Visionen in Prinzipat und Spätantike.Gregor Weber - 2000 - Stuttgart: F. Steiner.

Ecological validity of virtual environments to assess human navigation ability.Ineke J. M. van der Ham, Annemarie M. E. Faber, Matthijs Venselaar, Marc J. van Kreveld & Maarten Löffler - 2015 - Frontiers in Psychology 6:133724.
Route memory is frequently assessed in virtual environments. These environments can be presented in a fully controlled manner and are easy to use. Yet they lack the physical involvement that participants have when navigating real environments. For some aspects of route memory this may result in reduced performance in virtual environments. We assessed route memory performance in four different environments: real, virtual, virtual with directional information (compass), and hybrid. In the hybrid environment, participants walked the route outside on an open (...)

    John Finnis on Aquinas ‘The Philosopher’.Denis J. M. Bradley - 2000 - Heythrop Journal 41 (1):1-24.
In the ten dense chapters of his new book, John Finnis examines and sometimes amends what he takes to be the key moral, legal, social and political doctrines of Thomas Aquinas. Finnis correctly stresses that neither ethics nor politics, in the Arstotelian tradition to which Aquinas belonged, are theoretical sciences. They are ‘practical’ or action‐guiding sciences. Since societal order originates in free choice, it is subject to moral norms. The latter are more firmly grounded by Aquinas than Aristotle because the (...)

How absent negativity relates to affect and motivation: an integrative relief model.Roland Deutsch, Kevin J. M. Smith, Robert Kordts-Freudinger & Regina Reichardt - 2015 - Frontiers in Psychology 6:113521.
The present paper concerns the motivational underpinnings and behavioral correlates of the prevention or stopping of negative stimulation – a situation referred to as relief. Relief is of great theoretical and applied interest. Theoretically, it is tied to theories linking affect, emotion, and motivational systems. Importantly, these theories make different predictions regarding the association between relief and motivational systems. Moreover, relief is a prototypical antecedent of counterfactual emotions, which involve specific cognitive processes compared to factual or mere anticipatory emotions. Practically, (...)
